The Kern River Preserve/South Fork Kern River is one of the first ten 'Globally Important Bird Areas" designated in the United States. The Important Bird Areas Program was started by BirdLife International, UK, in the mid-1980s. Since that time IBA's have been designated throughout Europe and the Middle East. The IBA Program has now spread throughout the world including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. New York and Pennsylvania are the first two states in the United States to complete their IBA identification programs.

Information on California's IBA's is available on the California Audubon website, http://ca.audubon.org/IBA.htm.
